MacBook Pro M6 price and configurations
Apple sells two MacBook Pro lines right now: the familiar model with a Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED) display, and a new model with a PROLED XDR (OLED) display. The M6 chip is only in the 14-inch mini-LED model. Prices from Apple's US store:
| Model | Chip | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| 14-inch, Liquid Retina XDR | M6 (12-core CPU, 12-core GPU) | $1,999 |
| 14-inch, Liquid Retina XDR | M5 Pro (15-core CPU, 16-core GPU) | $2,499 |
| 14-inch, Liquid Retina XDR | M5 Pro (18-core CPU, 20-core GPU) | $2,699 |
| 14-inch, Liquid Retina XDR | M5 Max (32-core GPU) | $4,099 |
| 14-inch, Liquid Retina XDR | M5 Max (40-core GPU) | $4,699 |
| 16-inch, Liquid Retina XDR | M5 Pro (20-core GPU) | $2,999 |
| 16-inch, Liquid Retina XDR | M5 Max (32-core / 40-core GPU) | $4,399 / $4,999 |
The $1,999 M6 model comes with 16GB of unified memory and a 1TB SSD. You can configure it with 24GB or 32GB of memory and up to a 4TB SSD.
Apple also offers monthly payments of $166.58 for 12 months, and education pricing through its Education Store.
M6 vs. M5 Pro: what the extra $500 buys
| Spec | M6 ($1,999) | M5 Pro ($2,499) |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 12-core: 2 super, 4 performance, 6 efficiency | 15-core: 5 super, 10 performance |
| GPU | 12-core | 16-core (20-core option) |
| Memory | 16GB, 24GB or 32GB | 24GB or 48GB (up to 64GB with 20-core GPU) |
| Memory bandwidth | 153GB/s (16GB), 170GB/s (24/32GB) | 307GB/s |
| Ports | 3 × Thunderbolt 4 (40Gb/s) | 3 × Thunderbolt 5 (120Gb/s) |
| External displays | Up to 2 | Up to 3 |
| Battery (video streaming) | Up to 24 hours | Up to 22 hours |
| Weight | 3.4 lb (1.55 kg) | 3.5 lb (1.60 kg) |
| Power adapter in box | 70W | 70W (96W with 18-core CPU) |
Both have the same 14.2-inch mini-LED display, HDMI port, SD card slot, MagSafe 3, headphone jack and Apple's N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7.
Who should pick which:
- M6 if you mostly code, write, edit photos or do light video work, and use one or two monitors. You get the longest battery life of any MacBook Pro.
- M5 Pro if you need more than 32GB of memory, three external monitors or Thunderbolt 5 storage, or if you render video and 3D for long stretches.
The OLED MacBook Pro is a separate, pricier line
The new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display uses a tandem OLED panel with up to 2,000 nits peak brightness and a touch screen. It comes only with M5 Pro or M5 Max, not M6. Each configuration costs $400 more than the same chip in the mini-LED model:
| Chip | Mini-LED model | OLED model |
|---|---|---|
| 14-inch M5 Pro (16-core GPU) | $2,499 | $2,899 |
| 14-inch M5 Pro (20-core GPU) | $2,699 | $3,099 |
| 14-inch M5 Max (32-core GPU) | $4,099 | $4,499 |
| 14-inch M5 Max (40-core GPU) | $4,699 | $5,099 |
| 16-inch M5 Pro | $2,999 | $3,399 |
| 16-inch M5 Max (32-core / 40-core GPU) | $4,399 / $4,999 | $4,799 / $5,399 |
So the cheapest way into an OLED MacBook Pro is $2,899, $900 more than the M6 model. The OLED models are also listed as available starting November 6.
Release date
Apple's US store says "Available starting 11.6" for both the M6 model and the OLED model, with pre-orders open now. Delivery dates for custom configurations, such as 32GB of memory, can be later than for standard ones.
