How much faster than M4?

Task M6 vs. M4
On-device AI (LM Studio prompt processing) Up to 5x faster
Photo editing graphics (Affinity) Up to 2x faster
Ray-traced gaming Up to 2x faster
SSD Up to 2x faster
Wired networking (2.5Gb Ethernet) Up to 2.5x faster

Against the most popular Intel iMac, Apple claims up to 18x faster performance. Independent reviews were not out yet as of November 4.

Which iMac M6 should you buy?

Get the 10-core at $1,499 if it's a family or homework computer, you use Wi-Fi, and one external monitor (or none) is enough. Two ports are plenty for a keyboard dock and a drive.

Get the 12-core at $1,699 if any of these apply:

  • You want two external monitors.
  • You plug in more than two USB-C devices and don't want a hub.
  • You want wired Ethernet without paying for the option.
  • You might need 32GB of memory or 2TB of storage later. The 10-core model tops out at 24GB and 1TB.
  • You want Touch ID on the included keyboard, or nano-texture glass for a bright room.

If you would add Ethernet or a Touch ID keyboard to the 10-core model anyway, price that configuration against the 12-core before you check out.
